The Mamba Mentality: How I Play by Kobe Bryant (2018)

I decided to read this book after the tragic events which led to legendary basketball player, Kobe Bryant, passing away.

The book is highly inspiration for anyone willing to achieve big goals in life

It is amazing how much effort Kobe put into perfection, doing almost one extra session of training than anyone else in the team despite already being ahead at many skills.

This book is also about leadership, as Kobe was able to inspire others and achieve success as a team.

His relationship with a legendary coach, Phil Jackson, is also quite interesting to learn about. A book about Michael Jordan (Michael Jordan: The Life by Roland Lazenby) reveals similar patterns of the constant drive to improve and get better every day. I came across additional details on the training process, personalities and mindsets of both Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan in another book I recommend – 'Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable' by Tim Grover (also in my library). This book is written by Kobe himself, which makes it even more interesting.

Key notes

  • If you really want to be great at something, you have to truly care about it. If you want to be great in a particular area, you have to obsess over it. A lot of people say they want to be great, but they're not willing to make the sacrifices necessary to achieve greatness. They have other concerns, whether important or not, and they spread themselves out. That's totally fine. After all, greatness is not for everybody.

  • The mindset isn't about seeking a result – it's more about the process of getting to that result. It's about the journey and the approach. It's a way of life. I do think that it's important, in all endeavours, to have that mentality.

  • I wasn't scared of missing, looking bad, or being embarrassed. That's because I always kept the end result, the long game, in my mind (this is a good example of a 'Growth' mindset described in the book with the same name, which is also stored in my library on this website).

  • I had a constant craving, a yearning, to improve and be the best. I never needed any external forces to motivate me…I never felt outside pressure. I knew what I wanted to accomplish, and I knew how much work it took to achieve those goals. I then put in the work and trusted in it.
